Acne

What Is Acne?

Pimples, Clogged Hair Follicles, Blackheads & Whiteheads

Acne is the most common skin condition and it may include any combination of clogged pores and hair follicles, pimples, cysts, nodules, papules, pustules, blackheads, and whiteheads. It can affect anyone from birth to the senior population, but it tends to be most aggressive when it occurs in the skin of teenagers and young adults. In addition, acne is increasingly becoming more common amongst adults even into their fifth decade (particularly amongst females). Several contributing factors have been recognized, including:

  • Clogged Pores
  • Accumulation of Dead Skin Cells and Sebum
  • Presence of Bacteria (p. acnes)
  • Inflammation
  • Hormonal Changes
  • Inadequate Cell Turnover Rate

Effective Medical Treatment for Mild to Severe Acne

Allegheny Advanced Dermatology Center offers numerous treatment options for patients of all ages who are suffering from all types of acne, from minor to severe and painful cystic conditions. Do not believe the myth that acne must be allowed to run its course. Nothing could be further from the truth. Left untreated, acne tends to spread, progress deeper into the skin’s surface, and may leave permanent scars and purple, red, and brown discolorations (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation) on the skin. It’s never too late to begin treatment. Although for many, acne is strictly a cosmetic concern, many of our patients suffer from extreme pain and discomfort as a result of the presence of acne in their skin. Modern treatments are highly effective, yet gentle on the skin to help avoid creating additional skin concerns. Whether your acne is on your face, neck, chest, back, shoulder, arms, or elsewhere, we can help. A variety of treatment options for all types of skin are available:

  • Prescription Topical Creams
  • Prescription Oral Medications
  • Treatment for Scars & Dark Spots
  • Hypertrophic Scar Therapy
  • Retinoids
  • Anti-Inflammatories
  • Medicated Washes
  • Antibiotics
  • Prescription Hormonal Therapy
  • Chemical Peels
  • Steroid Injections
  • Laser Therapy
  • Skin Fillers

In some cases, additional treatments and therapies may be required for effective, long-term control of your acne. We will examine your skin and recommend the best treatment options for you based on your personal medical history, skin type, tone, and response to treatments. We will get your skin healthy again. Home Care for Acne

While under Dr. Kerstetter’s care, there are several additional steps that are recommended for most of her acne patients. All patients with acne should wear a non-comedogenic sunscreen daily and avoid unnecessary sun exposure while under active treatment. In addition, you should avoid touching your skin. When cleansing, a mild cleanser should be used to gently remove excess oils and skin cells. Ask Dr. Kerstetter what the best skin cleanser is for your skin type.

AADC is here to help correct your acne with effective, medically-proven treatments. We care about each of our patients. Let us help you avoid the pain, discomfort, low self-esteem, and depression that can sometimes occur along with this condition. Contact Dr. Kerstetter’s office at: (814) 944-7109.
